The group was formed on September 9th, 1999 by HIZUMI (vocals, ex-Le'veil), Karyu (guitar, ex-Dieur Mind), ZERO (bass) and TSUKASA (drums, ex-Le'veil). They held their first live performance on the 24th at Takadanobaba AREA. On December 26th of the same year they distributed a free demo tape, "蒼", limited to 60 copies
Their first single, entitled "蜘蛛" was released in October of 2000, and a second, "眩惑", in 2001. Fans began to increase. In July of 2001, the band released a mini-album, "TERRORS", and started to play at larger venues (despite vastly under estimating their boost in popularity, and continuously releasing limited copies of their music). However, notability was truly acclaimed after the release of their single "Garnet", which reached the top of the Oricon indies charts.
The success of "Garnet" gave D'espairsRay the opportunity to play events such as Stylish Wave 03 Mega Force Gig and the infamous Beauti-Fools Festival '03, organised by the magazine FOOLS MATE. They weren't just generating interest on their own soil. In 2004, they embarked upon their first European tour, "Wollust Ward dem Wurd gegeben", that traversed France and Germany.
Finally, the long awaited debut album "Coll:set" was released on June 29th, 2005, and the band toured North America, performing a sold out show in NYC on Halloween. In 2006, they crossed the globe again, this time for the Global Infection Tour, using footage from their stay in the United States on the following "The world outside the cage" DVD. A month later, they released "凍える夜に咲いた花", which saw a distinct visual and musical change to what once encompassed sinister, frenetic despair (lyrical content scoping vampirism, anthropophagy, sadism and masochism, depression, delusion, frustration and religious connotation). Their costumes were no longer comprised of leather suspenders, black belts or horroresque cosmetics; the band was clad in all white, and the single's title track surprised fans with its melancholy yet uplifting melody.
The Summer brought about the distribution of a photobook "LIQUIDIZE", initially only sold in Japan, but later through the internet and then in Europe, complete with a song composed and written by guitarist, Karyu. They were invited to play an assortment of festivals, Wacken Open Air, Ruisrock, and Taste of Chaos, accompanying acts such as Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu and their Japanese partners The Underneath and MUCC.
Early 2007 gave fans a brand spanking new single, to critical acclaim, and a follow up album, showing that the band could still be as dark as they were once famous for, whilst exploring their concept of "despair and brilliance", the contrast of light and dark further. After a promotional tour throughout Japan, they flew out to the United States yet again with a slew of bands from their homeland for J-Rock Revolution, and later on their own to Spain and Sweden.
Leaving fans starved for new material, D'espairsRay returned from the Taste of Chaos '08 tour to the release of "BRILLIANT", a single that was explosive but ultimately "shone", and their loyal followers, also called "mania", eager with anticipation for another promised single, "KAMIKAZE". In December 2008, D'espairsRay released "HORIZON", rife with experimentation, followed by an album boasting a combination of past, present and future styles, entitled "REDEEMER"
Throughout 2009, D'espairsRay were touring and recording nonstop. First, they announced a nationwide tour, "PSYCHEDELIC PARADE", to promote their new album. In the Summer, its European brother, "PSYCHEDELIC PARADE IN EUROPE" stopped by seven countries. Back home, the band revealed they had plans to compile a best of album, a collection of their popular indies songs from formation to 2008, titled "IMMORTAL" as well as a DVD showcasing their 10th anniversary live performance. The simultaneous release date for them was pushed back to December 29th due to complications.
